SKIN TAGS / MOLES / WARTS

COMMON SKIN LESIONS

Moles, medically known as nevi, are clusters of pigmented cells that appear as small, dark spots on the skin, and can vary greatly in size and color. Moles typically appear on the face, arms, legs, and torso, but can develop anywhere on the body. Although most skin moles are harmless, in rare cases they can become precancerous, necessitating surgical removal. Some patients also opt to remove benign moles for cosmetic reasons using surgical, laser, or natural mole removal.

A wart is a rough growth caused by one of a number of strains of human papillomavirus (HPV). Warts are unsightly and can impede normal function. There are a number of over-the-counter and home remedies for wart treatment, but wart removal by a medical professional is most effective.

There are other minor skin lesions that can be easily removed surgically ( permanent removal). Examples would include skin tags, sebaceous cysts, lipoma and even scars and tattoos.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Minor Cosmetic Surgery

Which conditions can be treated?
Appropriate skin blemishes include the following:

  • Skin tags
  • Moles & benign skin birthmarks
  • Crusting skin lesions
  • Simple or sebaceous cysts
  • Wart - like blemishes

Sometimes it is obvious that a blemish is safe (benign). However, anything removed will be sent to a laboratory for analysis to ensure it is safe.

What does the surgical procedure involve?
A small injection of local anaesthetic is used to numb the area.

Curettage and Cautery - involves the removal of very superficial tissue using a special surgical instrument therefore causing minimal scarring. If necessary the area is then cauterised.

Scalpel/Minor surgery - involves excising the blemish using a scalpel. A couple of stitches are then required to achieve the best cosmetic result.

What about after care?
The wound will be dressed and should be kept dry for a few days. Stitches will be removed after 7 to 14 days.

Are there any side effects?

As with all surgical procedures there is a small risk of infection and scarring, which will be discussed prior to your treatment
